Baseline Emissions Footprint
Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and were produced prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions. Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.
Baseline Year: Financial Year 2021 (6th April 2021 to 5th April 2022)
Additional details relating to the Baseline Emissions calculations
Clad Safety have not previously assessed or reported emissions so this is both our current emissions reporting and will become our Baseline Year. Details of data required and how to measure/calculate it has been taken from the GHG Protocol website. Our carbon emissions are calculated in line with the GHG Protocol using the following conversion factors.
Baseline year emissions:
|Upstream transportation and distribution: 349
One of the recommended options for calculating the upstream transportation figure is the spend-based method (page 7/21)
This is the calculation method we have used due to incomplete fuel-based or mileage-based information. We have been unable to source the recommended conversion factor [EEIO emission factor of transport mode or vehicle type (kg CO2 e/$)] so have used a sample of invoices to calculate an average £/mile figure and have used the “GHG emissions from transport or mobile sources” conversion factors from the GHG Protocol website to calculate the final tCO2e figure for transportation by road.
However, the same information for transportation by air or sea is not available so we have been unable to calculate these tCO2e figures. This is something we aim to measure in the future.

This calculation was made by collecting employees’ postcodes and working out individual commutes, and then multiplying by the number of days worked in a year per employee. Adjustments were made for part-time workers, and subtractions were made for average annual holiday entitlement (including Bank Holidays) and an average of 2 days per employee for sickness-related absence. Car transport-based calculations were made using an ‘average car’ figure.

Emissions Reduction Target
Clad Safety commits to reduce Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by half by 2030 from a 2021 baseline.
Clad Safety also commits to measure and reduce Scope 3 GHG emissions and by 2050 Clad Safety will be Net Zero. In order to continue our progress to achieving Net Zero, we have adopted the following carbon reduction targets.
- Operate a fully plug-in hybrid/ electric vehicle fleet within 3 years
- Require two-thirds of our global suppliers (by emissions) to adopt a science-based target by 2027
- Install daylight and proximity light sensors in the warehouse within 3 years
- Factor in environmental impact next time we are looking for a new supplier
- Reduce the average number of black bag waste wheelie bin collections per month over the next 12 months
- Start to specify that our couriers use electric vehicles whenever possible
- Look into the possibility of starting a ‘Cycle to Work’ scheme for local employees
- Work with suppliers to reduce packaging for goods in
Carbon Reduction Projects
Completed Carbon Reduction Initiatives
Clad Safety have not previously assessed or reported emissions so this is both our current emissions reporting and will become our Baseline Year. Therefore, we cannot comment on completed Carbon Reduction Initiatives however here are a few examples of Clad Safety’s long-standing commitment to carbon reduction and sustainability:
- Our purpose-built premises have been designed and built to meet the requirements of the BREEAM office sustainability assessment with a rating of “very good.”
- Clad Safety has developed its own range of Eco Recycled thermal base layer garments, conforming to the Global Recycled Standard (GRS) Certificate No. USB TEX2131-GRS-2021-01
- All of Clad Safety’s packaging is ethically sourced from sustainable materials
- Clad Safety has ISO 14001:2015 accreditation
In the future we aim to implement further measures such as:
- Sign up to industry-specific environmental/sustainability initiatives e.g. ‘Textiles 2030’
- Work with manufacturers to further a range of workwear made from recycled materials
- Further develop garment and PPE disposal to ensure uniforms are being recycled ethically and securely
Declaration and Sign Off
This Carbon Reduction Plan has been completed in accordance with PPN 06/21 and associated guidance and reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans.
Emissions have been reported and recorded in accordance with the published reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans and the GHG Reporting Protocol corporate standard and uses the appropriate Government emission conversion factors for greenhouse gas company reporting.
Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions have been reported in accordance with SECR requirements, and the required subset of Scope 3 emissions have been reported in accordance with the published reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans and the Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard.
This Carbon Reduction Plan has been reviewed and signed off by the board of directors (or equivalent management body).
