Why Is Hi Vis Orange Clothing Required When Working In Rail?

Traditionally, yellow and green are both used for train signaling, so rail workers wore hi vis orange clothing to avoid confusing the train drivers. Most rail maintenance work takes place in rural areas which makes orange a much better option for improved visibility. A worker wearing yellow hi vis clothing can blend into a green location while hi vis orange contrasts strongly against light and dark environments. All PPE worn by those working on or near the tracks must meet the safety standards set out in RIS-3279-TOM (formerly GO-RT 3279).

RIS-3279-TOM only applies to the UK rail industry compared to the European-wide nature of other EN safety standards. The aim is to ensure that all rail workers are sufficiently visible to trains approaching at speed or any other traffic. Read more…

Visibly Better Arc Flash Protection

Many individuals working on or near the tracks are at risk of an arc flash incident occurring. The UK operates on an electrified rail network which means anyone carrying out maintenance work is at risk of being exposed to an arc flash.

An arc flash explosion can occur when:

  • Working on or in close proximity to electrified lines, power cables and rails
  • Carrying out maintenance of track-side distribution panels
  • Groundworks during track maintenance
  • Installing railway sleepers, cables and fencing, putting in new fencing

Our specialist Arc Thermal Performance Value (ATPV) rated clothing will provide the varying degrees of Arc Flash protection required to satisfy most incident energy analyses. These range from flame resistant to flame retardant coveralls, trousers, tops and base layers that deliver a superior level of performance.

Alongside arc flash jackets, trousers, waterproofs, coveralls, and poloshirts, Clad Safety will also supply your team with arc flash helmets and gloves ensuring optimum levels of arc flash protection.

High Visibility Workwear for Women

Clad Safety stock a wide range of hi vis clothing for women that is compliant with both EN 20471 and RIS-3279-TOM. No longer are they wearing ill-fitting and uncomfortable workwear, PPE and safety footwear. Items have now been designed specifically for female employees to ensure optimum comfort and protection at work.

In the UK, employers are required to provide PPE, and if women are required to wear PPE on-site and it doesn’t fit a woman’s body, then this can be a barrier. The concept of PPE regulations is that it should be fit for purpose, fit for use, and fit for the individual. Unsafe PPE for women results in higher risk to the health and safety of women on-site.
