High Visibility Clothing For Women In Construction
The range of hi vis clothing for women working in construction has greatly increased in recent years. No longer are they wearing ill-fitting and uncomfortable workwear, PPE and safety footwear. Items have now been designed specifically for female employees to ensure optimum comfort and protection at work.
How many women work in construction in the UK?
Did you know that women represent half of the UK workforce yet only make up around 15% of the construction employees in the UK? This number is set to increase annually as more women are choosing construction focused roles.
For many years the construction industry was considered more suitable for the male workforce but in recent years this attitude has changed with the number of women employed continuing to grow.
How can we encourage more women into the Construction and Engineering Industries?
Encouraging women into the construction industry begins at school. Nurturing interests in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics and educating girls on what careers are available related to these subjects.
More women should be featured in news articles, social media, and marketing material. These platforms can be used to create female role models and educate future generations on careers in construction, engineering, rail, and other associated industries.
At present, the UK has the lowest percentage of female engineering professionals in Europe. Engineering UK reported in June 2021 that:
- Women make up 14.5% of all engineers
- This represents a 25.7% increase in women in engineering occupations (compared to a 4.6% in the overall workforce) since 2016.
- The number of women working in engineering occupations has risen from 721,586 in Q2 of 2016 to 906,785 in Q3 of 2020.
- This is an increase of 185,199 women in engineering occupations between 2016 and Q3 2020
Benefits Of Women Working In Construction
Removing the gender stereotype and embracing a diverse workforce is a huge benefit to any company. Men and women can think differently resulting in innovative ideas and perspective when problem solving and implementing strategies.
Women are underrepresented in the construction industry. Employing more women and promoting a varied workforce shows a company who are forward thinking and embrace equality and this will have a positive impact on their brand.
Is there suitable Health and Safety clothing available for women?
Yes! There is a wide range of ladies high visibility clothing (including maternity wear) and ladies safety footwear available.
Traditionally many of these items were designed with touches of pink to give a more feminine look but in recent years the feedback from other women was implemented and now a lot of hi vis clothing and safety footwear for women is identical in appearance to the men’s range but in a ladies fit.
In the UK, employers are required to provide PPE, and if women are required to wear PPE on-site and it doesn’t fit a woman’s body, then this can be a barrier. The concept of PPE regulations is that it should be fit for purpose, fit for use, and fit for the individual. Unsafe PPE for women results in higher risk to the health and safety of women on-site, through no fault of their own.
