High Visibility Garments – Orange Or Yellow?

Orange or yellow hi vis?

Orange and yellow are by far the most popular colours for hi-vis clothing worldwide, as these two colours are among the most highly visible to the human eye (yellow being the most). In the UK, they are the ONLY two colours that comply with EN 20471 and although fluorescent clothing is available in other colours, they are not classified as hi vis. All compliant hi vis clothing will have a label that shows the EN 20471 icon and the relevant class number.

Both colours are very effective but there are important differences, especially throughout the summers months. So which is best? There are a range of factors to consider, and in this article, we’ll delve into the characteristics of each colour and which is most appropriate for specific applications.

Contrast

A key factor is the actual habitat and the conditions pertaining on site. To be effective, hi vis garments should provide a sharp contrast to their environment. Rail workers, for example, wear fluorescent orange, as this colour stands out far better against the rural backgrounds they mostly operate in, consisting primarily of thick vegetation. RIS-3279-TOM compliant high-visibility clothing is the specific requirement for anyone working on or near a railway. It is noticeable that airport workers too, mainly wear fluorescent orange protective apparel, as it provides the optimum level of visibility in a complex environment.

Level of Conspicuity

Fluorescent yellow is still the most widely used colour, as it is the brightest on the chromaticity scale. It attracts instant attention without the extra hazard warning connotations of orange, which often means “caution” or “look out”. Traffic crossing wardens wear yellow for its ability to instantly draw the attention of drivers without alarming them. Yellow is also the most visible option in low light conditions.

Mix and Match

For a jumbled and busy background, hi-vis gear that mixes yellow and orange, (and even black) will  create the most striking contrast.

Insects!

In some parts of the UK the persistent and irritating attention of flying insects, particularly during the summer months, can be a huge and distracting problem! Wearing yellow tends to attract these pesky creatures, so wearing orange may be the preferred option.

Safety Regulations

It is important to check if there is a particular safety standard or legislation applying to the activity that is about to be undertaken. Additionally, some constructions sites may have a specific requirement for either yellow or orange hi vis. It is always key to conduct a risk assessment prior to commencing work.
